Members of the Jury of Ibn Rushd Prize 2014
The Ibn Rushd Fund’s voting procedure for the determination of the award winner:
After a period of public nomination (any person may nominate one other individual) all valid nominations, including information about the candidates, are forwarded by the Fund to an independent panel for review.
The honorary jury consisting of 3-5 people, women and men, from different Arab countries is elected on the basis of their expertise. The panel of jurors is chosen by the Executive Board and Advisory Board of the Ibn Rushd Fund.
Each panel member receives the others’ contact details to permit exchange, however this is not mandatory.
Each member selects nominees from the list and awards points for their personal first, second and third choice.
In the event that no single candidate receives a majority vote, the winner is selected on the basis of a points System. First = 3 points, Second = 2 points, third= 1 point.
The candidate who has received the highest sum of points from all panel members wins.
In the case of a tie the Ibn Rushd Fund board members determine the winner.

Abdelwahab El-Affendi
Abdelwahab El-Affendi is a Reader in Politics at the Centre for the Study of Democracy, University of Westminster and coordinator of the Centre’s Democracy and Islam Programme. He was also ESRC/AHRC Fellow in the RCUK Global Uncertainties Programme and Visiting Fellow at the Centre for Islamic Studies, University of Cambridge (2010-2012). His most recent books include: Darfur: A Decade in Crisis (2013), About Muhammad: The Other Western Perspective on the Prophet of Islam (2011), Who Needs an Islamic State? (2008). He is also co-author of the Arab Human Development Report (2004), and the report Contextualizing Islam in Britain (2009-2012). Dr.. El-Affendi also worked as a pilot (1976-1981), a magazine editor (1982-1989), and diplomat (1990-1997).
Toujan al-Faisal
Toujan al-Faisal is a human rights activist, born in Jordan in 1948. She was a TV journalist and Jordan’s first female Member of Parliament, serving from 1993 to 1997 in the first parliament after martial law was lifted and before a rate/quota for Women participation was established.
Al-Faisal has a Baccalaureate and MA in English Literature from the University of Jordan. She was facilitator and programme manager of talk shows and documentary and cultural films in Jordan TV and director of media development for eleven years (1971-1982) and also taught English at al-Ahliyya Amman University and the University of Philadelphia for two years.
Toujan was Head of Social Media and media advisor to the Ministry of Social Development.
She is the author of several books and a political analysis, including “The School we want”, 1984; abuse of children in “Doing Damage/Harming Children”, 1985; towards the change of Laws concerning marital/civilian status, on so-called honor killings, 1989. She writes political articles in the local and Arab newspapers regularly since 1990. She currently lives in Amman, Jordan.
Hassan Hanafi
Hassan Hanafi Hassanien, born in 1935, Cairo/Egypt, Ph.D. in philosophy, 1966 la Sorbonne, Paris, Professor of philosophy, Cairo university, Secretary General of the Egyptian Philosophical society since 1976, Vice-president of the Arab philosophical society since 1983. Author of 30 books in different languages: French, English, Arabic. The author of huge project Tradition and Modernism based on three fronts: 1- The Reconstruction of Islamic classical sciences: Theology, philosophy, Jurisprudence, mysticism and scriptural sciences. II- The foundation of the Science of Occidentalism to study the West. III- Theory of Reality as Hermeneutics.

Habib Abdulrab Sarori
Habib Abdulrab Sarori was born in Aden, Yemen, in 1956. He pursued higher studies in France, obtaining a Master degree in Informatics from the University of Paris 6 in 1983, followed by a PhD from the University of Rouen in 1987. He is a professor of computer science at the University of Rouen, France, since 1992.
Abdulrab has published literary works in both French and Arabic. His novel La reine étripée was published in 2000. His most recent publications being his book “La imama siwa al-aql” (Riyad al Rayes) and his novel “Ibnat Soslov” (Dar al Saqi), 2014. He has also written short stories and over 95 articles in French, English and Arabic since 1988.
