Announcment: Ibn Rushd Prize for Emancipation of Women in the Arab World

The Ibn Rushd Fund for Freedom of Thought announces that the Ibn Rushd Prize will be awarded this year for Emancipation of Women and Struggle for Equal Rights in the Arab World.

The prize winner will be given the award – like last year – in December on
10th December, 2000 in Haus der Kulturen der Welt in Berlin / Germany

Both board and advisory council are convinced that this is one of the most important social issues of the present time. In view of the delicate and explosive nature of the subject and the wide difference of opinion on feminists and their actual area of influence in Arab society the Fund accepts as many recommendations as possible. These will be passed on to an independent jury of four not beeing active members in the fund consisting of two women and two men. The names of the jury, Arab intellectuals from different parts of the Arab world, will be announced later.

Competent persons, who are thoroughly familiar with the subject and feel the need to respond, are invited to contact the Ibn Rushd Fund immediately to name the persons they consider as worth awarding and give the reasons of their choice and a short curriculum vitae.

The Prize is endowed with 5000 German Marks.

Last day of submission is the 30th June, 2000.

You will find on our Web pages details about the presentation of the first Ibn Rushd Prize, which was subscribed for the subject Freedom of Speech in Arab mass media and which was given finally on the 10th December 1999 in the Haus der Kulturen der Welt in Berlin to the TV Satellite Channel al-Jazeera

The Fund – its members are mainly Arabs and of other nationalities in and outside Germany – cooperate with different independent organisations, human right organisations, diverse societies.

Support democracy in the Arab World. Future generations need our assistance. Be a donating member in Ibn Rush regd. Any contribution is important.
